Contact The Gearbox Company

Ring us with the vehicle and the symptom and you will get a straight answer, usually from the person who would do the work. The quickest route to a useful number is a phone call, not a form.

Sending a gearbox to us

You do not have to bring the vehicle. Workshops and private customers throughout the South Island send us the unit on its own, and exchange gearboxes go back out on overnight freight to most destinations. There is more on how that works on the trade supply page.

What to have ready when you ring. Make, model, year, engine and the rego; what it is doing and when it started; and the gearbox code off the case if you can get to it. With those we can usually tell you your options and check the shelf while you are still on the line.

Finding us

Antigua Street runs along the western edge of the central city, and we are at the Addington end of it. Coming from the north, follow Antigua Street south past the hospital and the botanic gardens. Coming off the southern motorway, Brougham Street brings you within a couple of minutes. There is room to leave a vehicle with us rather than trying to park on the street.

We chose the site because it is easy to find and convenient to drop a car at, which matters more than it sounds when the vehicle in question will not select a gear.

What happens after you get in touch

  1. We ask about the symptomWhat it is doing, when it started, and what the vehicle is used for. Often that alone narrows it down.
  2. You get the options and the ballparkRepair, reconditioned exchange unit, or a checked used gearbox, with a straight opinion on which we would pick.
  3. Book it inAsk about a courtesy vehicle at this point if you need one.
  4. Nothing starts without your say-soIf the gearbox has to come out to be certain, you get told what is actually worn before you are asked to spend.

Where we work

Christchurch and Canterbury customers come to us directly. For the rest of the South Island we send exchange gearboxes on overnight freight, so a workshop or an owner further afield does not need to bring a vehicle to Christchurch to deal with us.

Tell us what your gearbox is doing

Give us the vehicle and the symptom - crunching into a gear, jumping out, whining, a stiff or heavy clutch, or no drive at all - and we will tell you honestly what your options are and roughly what each one costs. Repair, exchange or a good used unit: you decide, and nothing starts without your say-so.

Christchurch and Canterbury workshop. Exchange gearboxes freighted overnight to most of the South Island.
